Knowledge Base > Hardwire > Why can’t I use an external power supply to power zones?

in Hardwire

An external power supply may or may not have proper battery backup. Even if it does have battery backup, in the case of the battery getting low, it is unpredictable how the powered zones will react when that power get shut off. By using the builtin 12volt DC output on the translator, the translator has control of that output in a low battery situation, which allows it to gracefully shut down without causing false alarms or other trouble.
